I teach Beginning and Intermediate
Fiber Arts at the University of Missouri. I have 11 Beginning Fiber students, 1
Intermediate student, and 1 graduate student in my class. This class has
students from multiple medias like painting, printmaking, drawing, graphic
design, sculpture and ceramics. We spend a three-hour block of time, twice a
week, in the studio making paper, baskets, bookbinding, weaving, sculptural
paper and wearable surface designs. I’m hoping that adding VTS to my curriculum
will motivate and push my older students, those older than 17, to see art with
new eyes. I would like to see them engaged and go beyond their own passé
attitude of just making art they feel comfortable with, but attempt to redefine
their own self-made boundaries.
Shirley,
ReplyDeleteI know that if I had had VTS when I was in college it would have changed the way I looked at art. In addition to learning about artists and periods of Art history, VTS would have allowed me to really stop and "wonder--what's going on in this picture".
Shirley- My first experience with VTS was from the perspective of Art Ed student. VTS did help me look at art more deeply and intently, and I think you're students will definitely benefit from the addition of VTS to your curriculum!
ReplyDeleteI agree that even your college students will really benefit from this. Many art students struggle with sophistically articulating about their work, and I think VTS will help them practice that important skill!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like an interesting group of students to work with. I would imagine that they will see their own and others art in a new way. I am excited to hear how it all goes.
ReplyDeleteI, too, will be eager to see how these students adapt to VTS. By the time they arrive at college, students have had the "one right answer" paradigm drilled into them and, unfortunately, the traditional way art history is taught does little to contradict this! Be sure in your weekly introduction to VTS that you stress that you aren't looking for a particular answers. They may be slow to "catch on" at first, but i think you will be richly rewarded once they realize the interpretive license you are giving them. Let me help you sequence images for this group. As Yenawine states, VTS strives to intrigue viewers, but not stump them.
ReplyDeleteThank you Mary I would love that.
